This design references many elements of the arts and culture of Edo-period Japan. It features a folkloric Karasu (jungle crow) diving into the tempestuous Hokusai-inspired waves towards the lower left corner of the design. The bird clutches a golden-lacquered samurai sword and has become entangled in strings of koinobori (hand-painted, fish-shaped flags), skeletons and a lobster which trail chaotically in its wake. The tip of Mount Fuji can just be glimpsed behind the heaving tide. The upper portion of the design features a ragged section of an illustrated manuscript detailing various ornate arrowhead designs. In the centre of the top border is an aerial view of Deijima Island and harbour, the place where many animals were imported during Japan’s self-imposed isolation (Sakoku). The borders of the design depict a double layer of beautifully plaited samurai rope. Throughout the design, details and measurements are noted in Japanese hand-script, echoing ancient zoological manuscripts from the 17th century. A haiku is scrawled within the illustration, and two hanko stamps bearing the names Sabina Savage and Koinobori Karasu brand the lower right corner.

Translation of Sabina’s haiku within this design:

The Karasu dives

And koinobori flutter

Over the ocean
